Specialized in furniture and art objects from the Art Deco period (1920-1930), the Alain Marcelpoil gallery pays tribute to André Sornay’s work.
The gallery was founded in 2006 and introduces the public to French designer André Sornay’s exceptional prewar and postwar creations. The gallery director, Alain Marcelpoil, turned his attention to Art Deco in the 80’s with guidance from well-informed and passionate collectors. A native of Lyon, he then took a keen interest in 20th century artists from his region. That is how he discovered André Sornay whose work was utterly modern, personal and particularly innovative. Indeed, thanks to his technique of « cloutage » this inventive creator manufactured in small series « various works of art at modest prices, unique items ». « Cloutage » was a clever way to democratize art, following the example of the craftsmen of the Union des Artistes Modernes (U.A.M). Recognized as major actor in avant-garde art, André Sornay, who remained out of the public eye for a long time, now occupies the foreground of the national and international art scene.
