88 Gallery London specialises in collectible design and functional art. We represent artists and designers from around the world, and our curated collection is constantly evolving as new pieces are developed and new talents welcomed. We are proud to actively support young designers and to often fund production, enabling them to focus on their creative output. Quality of materials is crucial: we are only interested in pieces that will outlast us: pieces with a value that can be passed on through generations. Like living things, each object and artwork we show encourages interaction. Here, beauty emerges and strengthens the closer you get. The uniqueness of each piece is always the starting point. This year, we aim to create a space that functions like a poem; shapes as symbols, materials as meaning; the dynamism of the selected pieces\u2019 interaction provoking new connections or ideas to surface.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n To zoom in on two pieces recently added to our collection: one is Marius Ritiu<\/b>\u2019s artwork Event Horizon II<\/b>; a wall artwork in hand-hammered copper with a light element. <\/b>Marius\u2019 practice questions concepts such as nationhood, borders and nationalism. He is particularly drawn to copper as a material because of its primary role as connector and conductor. Its incorporation into technology (communication, transport) has enabled and increased the mobility of ideas, goods, and people, impacting the nature and physicality of borders. The quest essential to his work is to comprehend and express the global through the local, the universal through the particular, the familiar through the alien. His groundbreaking work explores the fundamental way in which we are all connected.<\/p>\n The other is Pierre Lapeyronnie<\/b>\u2019s M\u00e9tropole<\/b> light-sculpture. Made from fragments of recycled securit glass it appears suspended mid-crystallisation. Pierre’s fascination with resonance, waves and silence led him to explore the potential of sound as a material while studying at the Institute of Fine Arts. His interest in both sonic and spatial volume has shaped his career ever since, and his unique, sculptural pieces reflect his radical, constructivist approach to art and design. The functionality of his work is essential to him, but his quest goes beyond this; each piece he creates is intended to become part of an environment, to become (through reflections or voids) as interconnected with its physical context as a sound is.
